News! FSOB Celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year in Miami

fsob 2012

When I first met Noy, he showed up at my at-the-time-boyfriend’s house in his badass little honda accord. The silver hatchback sat so low on its chassis that we had to get out of the car everytime we came across a speed bump. It was 1999, and that kind of thing was cool. In the back seat of that car, crammed between jnco pants and jelly bracelets, I spent a lot of time fascinated at watching Noy move to the rhythm of the music that he so loved: breaks. Years later, Mitsubishi would release a commercial for the eclipse and I would think of him.

While I haven’t seen Noy since the end of 2003, I don’t think I will forget him, or his car for that matter. The impact that his love for breaks (and the fact that he was the only one with a car) had on me was extreme. Aside from hip hop breakdancers, I had never seen anyone move the way he had, I had never before hear a ‘breakbeat’. With him, we attended so many parties in the heyday of my adolescence: Ranch parties on Krome, Parties with AK1200 in converted strip malls that were packed to the brim, Amoeba that got shut down just when it was getting good, and my very first (the very first) Ultra.

Since I’m no good at defining music, I’ve gone and gotten a definition of the sound from a professional in the industry. As it turns out, “a “Break” refers to a “break beat” which is the part of a funk, soul or rock beat in which the drummer would play a little harder and more stylized. Producers took these small sequences of drums, usually no more than 4 to 16 counts and looped them. From there every style of music from hiphop to house, dubstep and of course, breaks and electro, utilized these patterns and sounds, each in their own style that defines the genre”. While breakbeats have gone some serious change from the time of Noy’s Honda, where he moved to midi-sounds accompanied by robot sounding vocals (think power96′s electronic dance music broadcast circa 2000), the evolution of the genre has allowed for the inclusion of many new variations of the sound. Which is where FSOB comes in.

When FSOB first made it’s mark, it had one clear and concise goal: To educate the masses on what Breaks are by delivering the best of the best in the genre. Fast forward to now, and FSOB is *the* breaks event during conference. Last year, we got a chance to sit down with the party’s co-founder, Glyn Morgan, for an interview discussing the history of the party. I strongly suggest you check it out if you’re interested in learning more about thefsob flyer party, and the man who made it happen. This year, the heavy line-up has a lot of buzz going and Glyn sat down with NBC.com to discuss what the event holds for it’s attendees. read that interview here.

If I had to choose one word to describe FSOB it would be ridiculous. With five rooms blasting top quality sound out of dynacord systems packed with a line up that rivals Ultra, the event is gearing up to celebrate its 10th anniversary this upcoming Friday at MEKKA with all the stops pulled. Headlining acts include some of the biggest names in the game with returning favorites LTJ BUKEM, and Stanton Warriors are being joined by first timers at FSOB Plump Djs, and boasts exclusive performances from Foreign Beggars, Dj Icey, Mt. Eden, and a special live set by Araabmuzik in addition to many many (MANY) more.

You can check out photos from last year’s event here . Tickets are still available for this year and can be purchased online at wanttickets for $50 general and $80 VIP and timeslots are available on the event’s facebook page.

You do not want to miss this. Seriously, dont make me tell you twice. And if you see Noy, tell him I said ‘Thank You’

Protip: Since youre probably going to need some recovery time from Smog v. Basshead, make your daytime activities count. Staying well hydrated is very important when you’re set on doing back-to-back mega event hopping. Also, be sure to arrive EARLY. Mekka is located in the heart of Miami’s poppin downtown club district with the Vagabond, Club Space, GoldRush and a bunch of smaller venues all relatively close by with their own events going on. Parking will get tough early and I promise that Miami’s parking authority has ALSO been waiting for this since last year.

News! Pacha NYC and Mixmag present MIXMAG IN MIAMI!

Everyone that’s ever experienced the week of festivities surrounding Ultra and WMC agrees: there’s always just SO MUCH good stuff happening and it’s impossible to see it all. Typically novice WMC-goers will try to cram in as many parties as they can, flitting from one to the other, stacking wristbands to the elbow, and end up totally waxed by day 3. Those who have been a few years in a row, however, know the score. Pace yourself, become well-informed, pick winners, and plan accordingly.

That being said, we’re going to help you out with that. Obviously the event on our minds here at SFC is our debut WMC pool party at The Carlton Hotel all day Saturday over on South Beach. But, there’s a few others you need to make sure you get to. First and foremost, check out the legendary Pacha NYC + Mixmag party at the Ice Palace West (formerly Karu & Y Ultralounge) in downtown Miami on Friday. It goes from 10pm to 6am, so if you’re hitting up Ultra it’ll be a perfect afterparty. The list of DJs for the party, like a lot of WMC parties, seems to be growing a little each day and is literally starting to bust at the seems. The big dogs on the bill are a Pendulum DJ Set (So basically Knife Party), Chase and Status, Steve Aoki, and JUST ADDED…..FLUX PAVILION! What might be more impressive though, is the ocean of talent booked right under them. Yolanda Be Cool, Riva Starr, Jesse Rose, Designer Drugs, Heartbreak, Sabo, Sazoon Booya, ETC!ETC!, and Jen Lasher (to name a few) each have enough juice to carry an entire night on their own, yet here there are stacked to the roof! On a more personal note, a few of the names on the flyer might seem a little extra familiar as well. That’s because as of right now, Bigmakk, somejerk, and Ma-LESS have been added to the party! HUGE! SFC’s artists are poised to make a major impression in the dance world with the number of events being played at conference this year, if they havent already with their original tracks and remixes.

Obviously there are more parties to talk about, but I don’t want to overwhelm you. It can get a little over-the-top trying to digest the information when it’s all splattered out at once, so consider this part one in a series of informative party posts pre-WMC. More to come, stay tuned party people…

News! The SFC WMC 2012 MEGAlist of Events

Miami Music Week Ultra Week events

Its that time of the year again, and this time, like every time before, its better than ever. This year, there is no annoying separation of church and state-esque proportions dividing the Miami Music Week and the Winter Music Conference. No, this year, the two have learned from their mistakes, picked up their britches and put things right back where they belong, where everything takes place at the same time and you’re left to freak out and search for cloning centers. The WMC has expanded this time around to take on a couple more days and lasts from March 16 until March 25th, with satellite events already littering my calendar.

For us, the Big Focus this year is on Smile for Camera’s first official WMC Event. Sure, maybe you were privvy to rock a pre-party or post party with us in the past, but this time were going legit. We have a killer line up to keep you jamming well into the night, including the only WMC performance from Moombah Master Munchi. You can read more about that here.

As always, I’ve gone ahead given up on getting any work done at work over the last few days to compile for you the ultimate resource of things to do. As always, I have left out Ultra, because its Ultra, you’re not living in a rock, and tickets are a million dollars anyways.

As always we’ll be adding more events as they pop up, so please leave me your suggestions for inclusions in comments or email your party listing to (or notify me of broken links): mgap@smileforcamera.com.

News! SFC’s got the MUNCHIs in Miami! Exclusive WMC Performance!

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s bomb-droppin’ time. You may already know that Smile For Camera, Social Overflow, and Chillin Music are presenting SFC:WMC:MIA:2012 @ The Carlton Hotel Pool in South Beach on Saturday March 24th. The party’s been in the works for a couple months already, and we at SFC have secured not only a spot for every artist on our roster, but also enough bass from our friends at PTE to blow the water out of the pool.

What you may not know, however, is that the world’s most in-demand and sought-after Moombahton DJ/producer, MUNCHI, will be playing his one and only WMC set there! Notoriously low-key, and considered by many promoters to be “ungettable”, MUNCHI might be the Banksy of Dance Music. Forever bucking the system and doing things his own way, MUNCHI’s reputation on the decks is as fierce as his tracks are dope. I know, it’s hard to believe, but direct from Rotterdam, Mad Decent/T&A Records’ illest of the Moombah ill will be at our party and our party alone! IN FACT, it’s his first Miami appearance ever, a fact sure to whip the local Moombah legion into a frenzy and all but guarantee a capacity-reaching event. Much excite!!

Also just added to the lineup: ETC!ETC! The L.A.-based producer has been on fire lately, with a string of content on Rot10, Southern Fried, and Mad Decent making its way through Beatport and into club systems worldwide in the past few months. Expect big things from this up-and-comer!

Ka-boom! Mind blown yet? Just remember, we still have over a month to f**k with your head even more! See you in Miami you lucky, lucky people!

Dubvibes is back and bringing the new year with an intense dose of bass for Ft. Lauderdale’s enjoyment, and this time around, they’re bringing out the big guns with Bare, aka Sean Rodela. With releases on Subhuman, Play Me, Buygore, other heavy-hitting dubstep labels, 2011 has been a HUGE year for this LA based tune maker. If you haven’t heard his music before, its the kind of ear melting face ripping bass laden tunes that the artist has affectionately labeled as Barestep.
If you want more background on Bare, I strongly suggest that you go read his facebook, (might as well ‘like’ him while you’re there) his mother wrote it for him, and who could know him better than his own mother? beats me…

Joining him for this 4th installment of dubvibes is Texan native, Christopher Lee Marshall, Crizzly. The young dj and producer is known for messing shit up in San Antonio night clubs, and no doubt he’ll be bringing his “everything is bigger in Texas” mentality to grace us with some booming beats.

As always, Dubvibes will once again be 18+ with ID, and will be hosted by Special K and Jumanji and will also feature perfomances by Big Chocolate, Josh Money, Renegades of Funk, Dubviking and Soular vs Alphaxero.

Of course, Smile for Camera will be on hand to take photos of your gorgeous faces, so make sure you dress the part. We strongly suggest that you purchase tickets ($20-40)in advance, this is one of those things you dont want to sleep on. You can do that by clicking here

News! The Mothership has Landed

skrillex mothership tour

If loud is your thing, then your mothership is almost here. The one and one controversial grandaddy of angry dubstep will be joined by genre titans 12th Planet and Two Fresh as well as Moombah pioneers Nadastrom for an event that will undoubtedly be one of the best of the year.

But really, you’re going to have to be a fan of loud. Skrillex, never one to disappoint, will be feeding his frenzied army of fans a heavy heavy dose of bass on an impressive sound-system powered by 50,000W of PK Sound on the tour. Did you get that? count those zeros. That’s a lot.

The tour stops will make its way to Orlando first, hitting the House of Blues on December 15th and will then make its way to Tampa on the 16th, playing at the Ritz. There can be no rest for the wikked, and the show must go on. On to Miami, to be exact, on December 17th.

Missing this is not suggested. But unfortunately, tickets are already sold out. The three Florida stops will be the last for the tour, with the Miami stop at the Fillmore bringing the whole thing to its conclusion. So if you have tickets, be ready to expect some balls-to-the-wall-this-is-my-last-night-on-this-tour-and-im-raging-like-a-mofo attitude from *everyone’s* favorite dj. I mean, dude invented dubstep after all. ;)

Love him or hate him, this is one for the books. SFC will be taking photos at the Miami show so be sure to tune back in for those a few days after the show.
