Of all the countries represented at Epcot Center, the Kingdom of Morocco clearly got the short end of the stick. It seems that despite having more than 12 centuries worth of history the best imagineers could come up with is a meet and greet with Aladdin, who’s tale takes place in Iraq. A true travesty for the land that is home to Casablanca. If you happen to be in the Orlando area this weekend and would like to experience a more authentic take on Morocco, the International Academy of Design & Technology is offering just that. Their Moroccan Summer Nights soirée takes place this Saturday and a plethora of festivities and cultural commodities are promised to be in store.

Comprised of several members of Orlando’s underground art community including Swamburger, the lead MC of Solillaquists of Sound, the The B-Side Artists took their moniker from the golden days of the music industry. In pre-Internet times before mp3′s were passed around like a flask at grad night, a b-side was the primary way music that was perceived to be “less than conventional” was brought to the masses.
These guys can be found doing their thing almost every night. Whether it’s out on the streets or in a nightclub, they’re out there. Opening Reception for the B-Side Artists 3rd Annual Art Show is June 17 from 6pm – 9pm. It will showcase new works form Swamburger, G. Lemus, Tobar, Tr3 and many others.

In addition to the obligatory reception Friday Ferox also has a different theme every month with live entertainment to tie into said theme. This month’s theme is tribal art. Entertainment at Friday Ferox ranges from sword swallowing to burlesque shows. Performers this month include the belly dancers of Florida Tribal Dance, Twisted Trystan & The Grotesque Burlesque, live music from The Manteis Project, plus live henna and body art. The Orlando International Fringe Festival, now in its 19th year is the longest running festival of its kind in the entire USA. The nature of the shows range from family oriented to completely uncensored. 100% of the admission fees go to the artist involved with the festival. During the course of this festival’s nearly two decade long history it has received many accolades. Recently it was the recipient of the 2009 United Arts A+ Excellence Award for Community Engagement and was voted the Best Culture Event in Orlando by the Orlando Sentinel.

Attending the festival can be rather complicated due to an overly convoluted color-coded button system the festival uses for admission. In order to attend a show one must first purchase a colored Fringe button for $8. Each of the different venues is given a color. For example if someone wanted to watch a show that is in the Yellow Venue they would need a yellow button plus a ticket for that particular show. If you feel that’s too much of a hassle there are free shows outside. All show listings can be found on the Fringe website listed below. btw things tend to get a little weird here. There will be plenty of beer and wine on site to amplify that.

Orlando’s PlayFest is winding down, but before it comes to a close, Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman will deliver the keynote. The keynote event will be presented in a format similar to Inside the Actor’s Studio. Hoffman will discuss his stage and screen career, as well as his recent foray into play development. When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, most people chose something intangible. However, when you share part of your namesake with a Nordic God, it seems nothing is intangible. Thomas Thorspecken’s New Year’s resolution for 2009 was to go out and sketch something everyday for the entire year. All in an elaborate attempt to lay roots in Orlando’s art community.

The result: He succeded. Not only did Thorspecken manage to sketch something everyday in 2009, his name has become synonymous with art in Orlando.

And Amazingly, he still continues sketching even though he originally intended this to be a one year long endeavor. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of his sketches is that he seems to be willing to sketch anything. Whether it be one of Brian Feldman’s performances or a dive bar full of Packers fans; if it’s happening in Orlando (or somewhere Thorspecken is vacationing) there is a chance Thomas Thorspecken will be there to capture it all in his sketchbook.

Earlier this year he held a small retrospective at Dandelion Communitea Cafe featuring his 2009 sketch books. If you missed it and would still like to see his sketches in person, you’re in luck. On March 18th, Thorspecken’s work will be on display inside a U-Hall parked outside of the City Arts Factory. The U-Hall itself is sponsored by TheDailyCity.com and is an official venue for the monthly 3rd Thursday Art Walk. In addition to his sketches, Thomas Thorspecken has a handful animation department credits in Disney films, such as Lilo & Stitch and Mulan.

When the Orlando Weekly dedicates an entire story to your innate ability to bring the house and party, then you can be rest assured that you’ve got a good thing going. Not Them, a local hip hop group from Orlando, can claim just that. With Purifoy behind the camera of this video, the boys shine, and showcase not only their talent, but their goofiness and ability for fun.

Alex Purifoy is a Genius. If you haven’t heard of him, then that’s your bad; this kid packs a serious amount of talent in a somewhat small package (compared to my fat ass self, at least). It’s somewhat to be expected though, born in Kansas City, Missouri, Purifoy took his creative talent to Northwest Missouri State University and then moved to Florida to further develop his skills at Full Sail. No way middle America could contain talent like this. He is constantly drawing inspiration from his hometown, and has dreams about dinosaurs, lives to make fun/art happen and is seriously someone to look out for.

Rather than trying to explain to you why this Not Them video is amazing and what brought it about, i’ll just copy and paste Alex’s own intro:

I shot this in my garage out side of Orlando about a year ago when my good friends Gentleman J and the Dirt Merchant were hanging out for the day. This is one of the rare times I just started shooting when I had nothing else to do. We got lucky and a dude working on the landscaping around the neighborhood was driving that awesome Spiderman truck. It was even cooler in person. Unfortunately, I thought the hard drive was done for after it drank some water. I plugged it in today and it booted right up. I jumped into action and transferred the footage over and did some strange color correction to amp up the weirdness of two dudes preforming infront of my giant Christopher Walken painting.

And these guys are something else, and definitely worth seeing live. An amazing director paired with a couple of guys who are known as local legends of Hip Hop? count me in.

Blank Space, Orlando’s newest art gallery first opened it’s doors in October and instantly became the crème de la crème of the 3rd Thursday art walk, a monthly event where local artists display their works downtown in nontraditional galleries. The reason for this is the performance group DRIP premieres a new show there every 3rd Thursday. Their performances could be described as an interruptive dance number drenched in paint and sprinkled with a dash of razzel dazzle. Fans of Cirque du Soleil and Blue Man Group will enjoy DRIP and be interested to know that they have performed with both. Although there is usually a $15 charge to see DRIP this weekend performances are free.

On November 15th vandals spray painted swastikas and hateful words upon The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of Central Florida. In addition to other gay owned establishments in the area. As a response the Orlando chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will be hosting a charity fundraiser event this Sunday, December 13th called Get Your Paint On. Attendees will be able to add their own personal touch to a new mural. As an added bonus there is a fair chance attendees may also be featured in a Thomas Thorspecken sketching of the event. A suggested donation of $5 is in place. Proceeds will help The Center invest in a new security system.

Looking for something more Scandinavian to do this weekend than listening to ABBA while eating Swedish meatballs at IKEA? Then you’re in luck! This Saturday, December 12th, The Museum of Seminole County History will be holding their annual St. Lucia Day Festival. St. Lucia lived from 283 C.E. – 304 C.E and is the patron saint of the blind. She was sentenced to death for refusing to marry a pagan and her eyes were gouged out. There is an entire holiday dedicated to her, which is celebrated throughout Scandinavia and especially in Sweden. St. Lucia was seen as a beacon of light and there is very light during the winter in that particular region of the world. For this reason December 13th, the longest day in the unreformed Julian calendar was dubbed St. Lucia Day. Traditionally young girls would wear wreaths on the heads with lit candles in them as part of the festivities. This is not as widely practiced in modern times, as it is as dangerous as it sounds.

As it turns out, Orlando was the birthplace of a very significant piece of literary Americana. Jack Kerouac, one of the founding fathers of the Beat Generation (beatniks) and major source of inspiration to Hunter S. Thompson, wrote the novel The Dharma Bums in small house in College Park, while living with his mother in 1957. This was also the time period when the critical acclaim of On the Road thrust him into the spotlight. It was here in Orlando, where Kerouac began to experience fame. However, due to Kerouac’s transient nature, his residency in Orlando remained largely unknown or unmentioned even by his own biographers, until 1996. Bob Kealing, a local reporter and NBC affiliate made the discovery and located the exact address from Kerouac’s brother-in-law and estate executor John Sampas. Shortly thereafter, The Kerouac Project was established to purchase the building and preserve its historical significance.

The Kerouac Project also setup a residency for writers program in, which inspiring authors can apply to live in the Kerouac House free of rent for 3 months, while they work on their own manuscripts. The house has also been restored and refurnished to resemble a contemporary 1950s home, creating a fully immersive environment similar to the one Kerouac was in while he wrote The Dharma Bums. Application information can be found on the official website of The Kerouac Project. Or if you’d prefer to just visit, you can swing by this Saturday, November 14th. Current house resident, Bill Miles will be doing a farewell reading of his novel Alaska Unsalted at 8:30pm. Please note, The Kerouac Project requests that no one arrive prior to 8pm.

The Orlando Film Festival is currently taking place downtown at the new Plaza Cinema Cafe. Today and tomorrow are the final days of this festival, but you still have time to catch some great films. I personally recommend viewing Enigma + 2:22 tonight at 6:50pm. Programming for this festival includes submissions from all over the world, but Steven Shea’s short film 2:22 was filmed right here in Orlando by the Orlando based production company Abyssmal Entertainment. 2:22 has been receiving some pretty glowing reviews and when it premiered last month at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain it sold out to an audience of 1,500. Hey everybody, it looks like I’m the newest columnist for Smile For Camera. I’ll be posting informative periodicals regarding Orlando’s local art community. We actually have a lot of really cool art happenings that don’t always get the exposure they deserve hopefully these posts will help spread the word. The 5th Annual Orlando Puppet Festival, which is currently in progress, is something I highly recommend. Don’t dismiss the festival as something just for kids, although the festival includes events for children and families there are always shows for adults as well. Some past performers of the Orlando Puppet Festival include some serious heavy hitters like Phil Huber who did the marionette sequences in Spike Jonze’s masterpiece Being John Malkovich as well as John Tartaglia of Avenue Q fame. Urban Artists and huge fan of the color pink, Buff Monster’s work gets noticed. To this day I have a buff monster sticker on my laptop, that I actually moved from the outside to the keyboard because I got tired of telling people “No, I do not have boobs on my laptop.” The Artist will be dropping his 8” Dunny, which makes its east coast debut today.

From the Artist himself last week: “Yes, next week Kidrobot will be releasing the 8″ Dunny that I designed. It retails for $75, they did a run of 1000, and there is a super awesome gloss coat on it. I’ll be signing at the LA store on Wednesday, the Dallas store on Thursday and the Miami store on Friday”

While Buff Monster has on several occasions produced a Dunny for the popular LA Series a few years back, this is his first 8 inch specimen. Buff monster will be at the Kid Robot store today from 6pm -8pm. Get there early to get your hands on one of 1000 Dunnies existence.

As we are saying goodbye to March, I realize that it’s a little late to talk about the trends of 2008, but since smileforcamera.com recently added a fashion section into their already great site I thought it would be entertaining to laugh at our worst fashion mistakes of last year.

1. Gladiator Shoes
Ladies, did you really think these shoes would accentuate your legs, or your little black dress? No! These sandals were made for Roman Gladiators and should have never been reinvented.
Unless you are planning on throwing a Do As The Romans Party, please keep these things off of your feet, actually just throw them away… right now.

2. Bright Tights
These should have stayed on the runway, where anything is acceptable.

3. Scarves-o-plenty!
Scarves in the summer! Why? It’s hot enough as it is. I never really understood that trend, unless of course the person has some sort of masochistic instinct and likes to suffer. Also just as bad was the over the top layering of scarves that hid the neck making people look silly and frumpy.

4. Maxi Dresses
These are only okay to wear if you are pregnant or can’t afford a real prom dress. Otherwise there is no excuse.

5. Harem Pants
The picture says it all.

6. Over the Top Animal Prints
We all love a nice leopard print bra or cute zebra heels but remember to keep your animal pieces separate and to wear them in moderation or it can be a bit too much. Animal print is something that seems to rotate back in style frequently so it’s a good investment.

And the best (worst) for last,
7. Crocs!
If you don’t understand why these made the list then you probably belong in Disney with your tucked in Florida tee and fanny pack hanging over your gut. Enjoy the smelly feet!

Andrew Spear is a large character in almost every sense of the word. He is taller most people I know, and his booming voice can be heard over speaker systems and across cities. He has an exceptionally large head, which undoubtedly houses a large brain and an equally grand personality. It’s no wonder then that Andrew’s most recent project is a mural that spans over 65 feet by 188 feet on the side of an entire building in the heart of downtown Orlando. Completed in just less than two weeks, the mural stands as a totem to the artists’ amazing capabilities.

Spear is an artist, a musician, an entrepreneur, and a New Englander with a heavy accent. Yet he still finds time to DJ the Worst Music Parties (held semi-regularly about twice a year or when he freaking chooses too), to paint club and business murals, and to answer interview questions for friends that accost him at 3am on a Friday morning on Orange Ave.

AS: thats why i call my website spearlife, i didnt know how to really categorize myself. i wanted to be recognized for the whole thing.

art / illustration is my first love, but then music is the most important thing in my life, outside of my family.

as far as weight on my own talents, im my own worst critic. i still havent done a damn thing yet…. see what i mean !?!?!

SFC: You’re painting this mondo mural right now in downtown. Where exactly is it, what’s it for and when’s it slated to be finished?

AS: the Dynatech Building downtown (Magnolia and Jefferson) the north wall. 65 ft high x 188 ft. long !!!!! IT’S FUCKING MASSIVE !!!

just for the record i would like to say, IT’S NOT MY DESIGN !!! the artist that did the original piece was Martha Mahoney. Her piece was like 16 x 20 inches. Dynatech called and asked if we

(my mural/ faux finish co., METRO FINISHES) could replicate it on the wall.

it’s also the SECOND TIME that i’ve done it. Originally we had done it last year, but they had water damage and had to have us REDO IT !!!! …..but we charged them again, so i didnt mind. we finished it in 2 weeks, and i still cant feel my wrist from painting that fast….. word ?!!?

SFC: Tell me why a Trojan should hire a Bruin:

AS: …… world peace ??

SFC: You’ve done some cover work for The Orlando Weekly, and some art for Solilaquists. Anything else that has slipped under the radar?

AS: ohh yeah, i’ve done covers for Tampa, St. Petersburg, Boston and Sarasota weeklys.

Record covers for Bastard Jazz & Funk Wax. i just did and ad campaign for Grande Absinthe, and the Dew Tour Program Guide. Im all over the place….. or trying to be at least.

SFC: It seems like every other Andrew Spear is an artist, what’s with that? Is it in the name?

AS: Yeah right, ??? We’re starting a cult.

I’ve been in contact with some of them, and we’re talking about the myspace/ facebook page dedicated to Andrew Spear’s around the globe….im not kidding.

SFC: Musically, you play a very wide assortment when you perform. What’s your favorite kind of playlist?

AS: I LOVE ALL MUSIC !!!! Truly, i do. Sometimes it’s a little much. i could sit and download music for days. Not to say that i dont still support local record stores and artists, which i still do.

The best dj’s are the ones that are music fans first, PERIOD. You can tell by their sets usually. It’s funny too, cause there are soooo many dj’s that dont know shit about music other than Breaks, or Drum & Bass, or whatever. As far as a dance party play list, disco is my first love, cause DISCO WILL NEVER DIE !!!!! ….. (im listening to Brainstorm as we speak….see !?!?!)

SFC: What are your Musical influence?

AS: The Beatles, Van Halen, the Beastie Boys, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Zapp & Roger and Armand Van Helden, are the commercial core.

SFC: Artistic influences?

AS: My dad– James Spear, Paul Gaugin, Philip Burke & Ralph Steadman. But honestly, im not that into visual art. Im more into music as my artistic influences, for real. When i was a 4 years old my dad used to put on Beatles records and i would draw their lyrics. The Beatles music are the same as visual paintings anyway, as is most great music.

SFC: I noticed you (or some other Andrew Spear, but for the sake of my interview, we’ll say its you) have a profile on whodatedwho.com. If you were randomly selected to be on one of those celebrity-dating shows, describe your dream date. What does she look like and what do you do?

SFC: Many people don’t know it, but your artwork can be found all over town. What’s your proudest accomplishment?

AS: i think the first time i was in a magazine was thrilling. ICON MAGAZINE ( they are defunct now) while i was living in N.Y.C., 1997. I was so excited, i couldnt believe that they published my work

(the story was about lame ass vocal frontmen, i did a portrait of Adam Durowitz of the Counting Crows crying in the rain.)

Looking back it’s really no big deal, but you need those accomplishments to set higher goals.

if you see something and say “i can do that”, then shut up and do it already. It’s worth it when you actually do it !!!

SFC: Rumor has it you never finished your tenure at Ringling School of Art. Do you think things would be different for you if you did?

AS: Art school for the most part is a fucking joke, and i know first hand. Of all the people that i went to school with, maybe a handful are doing it, (an art related career).

Ringling was filled with Hobbiests. Most of the students there didnt know what they wanted, but their parents wanted them out of the house.

So they sent them to one of the most expensive art schools in the country. I saw it first hand…..i mean, there was a fucking fraternity there….. AT AN ART SCHOOL !!?!?!?!?!

SFC: Ever think of going back up North? why?

AS: Yeah, every year after the winter is done here….. and cause i miss my family.

SFC: Tell us about the Worst Music Party. What’s the point.

AS: W.M.P. is the best party and i’ll tell you why, cause NOBODY IS AS COOL AS THEY THINK THEY ARE !!!!

If you are listening to stupidly horrible music, everyone is laughing, and everyone knows all the words, it makes you dance badly, it makes you more comfortable cause everyone else is doing it.
