The Insomniac/Smile For Camera Porter Robinson show in Orlando at Takeovr is just around the corner. Flyers are out, presales are moving (like, actually selling, unlike when you normally hear that phrase), and Central Florida is abuzz with anticipation. All this comes on the heels of his his insane College Invasion event (VIDEO BELOW) with Tiesto in Gainesville just over a month ago, which he tweeted as being one of his favorite events he’s ever played. People are driving in from Tampa, Miami, and even Georgia. The show has all the indications of a sell-out, a memory-maker sure to rival Afrojack and Dillon Francis.

So now let’s discuss the anomaly that is Porter Robinson. For such a young lad, Porter’s sound is as mature as it gets, save the occasional wildcat sample or beer quote. His big-room tracks should be perfectly suited to Roxy, one of the larger clubs in Orlando that’s almost as well known for raging electro as Porter himself. At just 19, he’s on his way across America and Canada, on a tour supporting his new Spitfire EP, released on Skrillex’s OWSLA label (see our previous post on it HERE). This tour comes after a summer full of festival performances (Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival [3 cities], Electric Zoo, South by Southwest, Global Dance Festival, Virgin Mobile FreeFest, Beyond Wonderland, and Nocturnal Festival) and the OWSLA tour with Skrillex in July.

Prior to this summer though, he wasn’t exactly just a normal high-school kid, going to school and coming home after to play video games. Well, he was, except his video games were a little different than yours. Porter started producing on Sony’s Acid Pro when he was just 13 years old, trying to copy video game themes he’d heard. From then until now, Porter claims to have worked on music almost everyday, a testament to the very work ethic he attributes his success to. After he’d gotten familiar with songwriting and producing within a D.A.W. (Digital Audio Workstation), he made the switch to FL Studio and started making ‘Hands Up’ and wonky fist-pumper ‘Eurohouse’ music.
At 17, he made and released his first single, Say My Name, on Glamara Records. Instant game changer. It went straight to #1 on Beatport’s Electro chart, with no discernible marketing or hype. After that, he was signed to outstanding electro producer/label genius Lazy Rich’s Big Fish Recordings. A string of releases followed, including Im On Fire and Hello (co-written with Lazy Rich and featuring vocalist Sue Cho). Then the REALLY big guys started paying attention. Avicii’s people rang him up for a remix of Seek Bromance, Innerpartysystem had him do American Trash, and Lady Gaga commissioned an Edge Of Glory rework as well. He then toured with Tommy Lee, DJ Aero, Skrillex, and Porter in Feburary 2011 for the Project Blue Book Tour.
Then he graduated high school.
Jealous yet?
